Two killed, several injured as police car rams into crowd while chasing matatu

Two people died and several others were injured after a police car that was in pursuit of a matatu rammed into a crowd in Kisii.

The incident that took place in Itumbe market.

According to eyewitnesses, the police car lost control as it was chasing the matatu.

One of the traders died on the spot and the other at Lenmek hospital.

“Immediately after the accident, locals engaged police in running battles as the officers fought to take the body of the deceased away,” said an eyewitness.

Police later removed the body from the scene as angry locals barricaded the busy road and lit fires in protest of the accident.

The incident comes bareley weeks after eleven people were killed in a grisly road accident on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The dead were passengers in a 2NK matatu headed for Nairobi from Nakuru that was smashed by a truck at Kikopey trading centre near Gilgil town. The 40-ton lorry was going downhill.

The truck later hit five other vehicles that were driving in the opposite direction but luckily the occupants escaped with minor injuries.
