Maendeleo Chap Chap leader Mutua faults housing levy timing

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has said that there has been poor communication to Wananchi about the 1.5% housing levy.

This has in turn created resistance and conspiracies against it.

“The country is facing dire conditions of rising fuel prices, low circulation of money and drought. This makes the levy appear punitive,” he added.

Mutua is also of the idea that the structure of the housing program seems to be focused on the urban areas. “We need to be careful that we do not perpetuate trickle down economics that takes years to impact the dire lives of our people who are suffering in abject poverty.”

He has urged the urge the National Government to postpone the implementation of the levy until Wananchi understand how it will be beneficial to them.

On matters corruption, Governor Mutua said corruption rates are quiet high and many members of the public believe that Government officials especially senior politicians in the National and County Governments are thieves.

“It is baffling why some senior government officials have resisted scrutiny of their wealth, making Wananchi think that the wealth is ill gotten. Only a thief resists a lifestyle audit.”

To ensure that new budget allocations are not used to make a few people rich while the rest of Kenyans who fund the budget through taxation wallow in poverty,he proposed that no budget be passed by legislative bodies until concerned leaders undertake lifestyle audits.

Parliament and County assemblies should not pass the 2019-2020 budget estimates until leaders such as the President, Deputy President, Governors, Cabinet Secretaries, Judges and other State Officers have undertaken lifestyle audits.

“We must show by action that we are fighting corruption. This is the only way to rescue our country because ‘tumechoka,” he said.
