Nyandarua county signs pact to plant 1.4 billion trees

Governor Francis Kimemia has signed a deal with an international company to plant 1.4 billion trees in the next ten years.

Mr Kimemia inked the deal yesterday with the directors of Anarrosi Capital Partners, led by Chief Executive Officer Paul Njaga.

The partnership will result in over 140 hectares of land being put under forest cover within the Aberdare ecosystem.

A bamboo processing plant will also be established in the region as the tree is one of the many species that will be planted.

Private farmers and those living along the lake Ol Bollosat wetlands region are set to benefit.

Kimemia said Nyandarua would reap big from the global carbon credits market.

“Nyandarua’s forest cover is at 22 per cent, well above the national average of six per cent and our intention is to reach 30 per cent to restore the Aberdare ecosystem which serves as a water tower and carbon sink,” he said.
