Crafty students gets more from bursary committee

A bursary committee in Murang’a has been losing thousands of shillings through double allocation to beneficiaries who lodge applications with different names.

In the past two years, university students seeking financial support from Kigumo constituency bursary committee have been interchanging their names in a bid to get more funds.

In the last allocation, some of the continuing students allegedly received double allocation which was channeled through their institutions.

At Maseno University, one student got Sh7,000 twice by interchanging her name in the applications.

At Kiriri University, another student received double allocation after presenting different names.

A student at Masai Mara University, received Sh14,000 in a case of double allocation.

Recall the cheques

A student at Masinde Muliro University got Sh49,000 after he interposed his names to be awarded Sh7,000 and Sh42,000.

After the anomaly was exposed, the bursary committee chaired by Daniel Njuguna was forced to recall the cheques from some universities.

Njuguna said they are working to scrutinise the names and admission numbers to eliminate cheating cases.

The anomaly was detected after some students of Moi University complained that they had not received the money.

Njuguna said the committee plans to acquire software that will be installed in their system to enhance transparency.

“The committee regretted the anomalies indicating the students are crafty and changed their names to suit their interests,” he said.

Two weeks ago, Kigumo MP Ruth Mwaniki announced that all applicants for bursary were awarded.
