Avoid embarrassing occurrences in sports

Over the years, like in many sports, the standards of volleyball in the country have continued to dwindle and it is high time action is taken to stall the same. Kenya only managed a third place in the just concluded Africa Women Club championships held in Egypt where Pipeline finished third.

The event was marred by an ugly scene after Kenya Prisons were ordered home by the State Department for Correctional Services Principal Secretary Zainab Hussein. Hussein surprised the country when she claimed not to have known that the team had travelled, an explanation that is quite lame considering that majority of the players are Prison’s staff and therefore civil servants who cannot travel without official authorisation. As it is, Kenya Prisons may be banned for failing to play in the tournament to the end.

The surprising thing is that the Kenya Prisons men’s team was flagged off to take part in the same competition by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i raising doubts on Hussein’s actions.

Prisons remains one of the strongest volleyball teams from Kenya and this action is likely to cause them damage in future.

Clearly, there is need for the government to invest more money in the sport and avoid such embarrassing occurrences which only demoralize the players.
