St Peter’s Mumias reclaim rugby title

St Peter’s Mumias and Butere Girls retained their regional titles after triumphing in their respective finals of the Western Region Secondary Schools Term One games yesterday at Chavakali Boys and Kaimosi Girls, Vihiga County.

Former national and East Africa rugby 7s champions St Peter’s beat Vihiga 21-10 to recaptured their regional title and book a ticket to this year’s national Term One games set for Shimo La Tewa and Shanzu Teachers College, Mombasa.

Three tries from Floyd Wabwire, John Bedan and Felix Chacha, which were converted by Williams Muhanji, were enough to see the 2016 East Africa winners repossess the trophy they had lost to Chavakali last year.

St Peter’s coach Shimenga Livondo said their aim is to reclaim their titles at all levels this year.

“Our objective is to salvage all our titles and I’m glad we have done it at the regional level. We now shift our focus to the national games,” Livondo said.

Butere successfully defended their title in girls’ basketball after beating bitter rivals Tigoi 60-42.

Marylisa Omondi and Everlyne Atieli were once again instrumental for Butere anchoring their side to victory with 15 points each.

Lavendah Khakai added 11 for last year’s national finalists while Everline Opondo scored 13 for Tigoi.

Butere, known for their never-dying spirits, overcame a shaky start to stop Tigoi from making it to the nationals for a second consecutive year.

Trailing Tigoi 11-19 by the end the first quarter, Butere refused to give up and played their hearts out just like they did in last year’s national games.

Though new to the championships, Butere wowed and won the hearts of many in Embu. They were crowds’ favourites thanks to their fighting spirits that saw them finish second and qualify for the East Africa games on their first attempt.

Butere captain Elizabeth Adhiambo said they drew inspiration from the desire to return to the national games.

“We all wanted to play at the national games and that motivated us to keep fighting despite being unstable in the first quarter. We want to win the national title and I believe only consistency will see us achieve our objective and that is why we were not ready to let anyone stop us,” Adhiambo said.

Determined to retain their title and return to the national showpiece, Butere regained their footing to take control of the game in the second quarter.

Knowing they were only minutes away from the national games, they staged a brilliant show to take the second quarter 24-11 as they led 35-20 at half-time.
