David Moyes insists Germany star Toni Kroos would have joined Manchester United in 2014 - had he not been sacked.

Moyes took over at Old Trafford in the summer of 2013, replacing Sir Alex Ferguson in the dugout.

However, just nine months into a six-year deal, the ex-Everton boss was dismissed with United, then English champions, languishing seventh in the Premier League.

At that point, Kroos was in the midst of a contract dispute with former club Bayern Munich.

And despite being a regular under Pep Guardiola, Die Roten chiefs refused to pay Kroos similar money to his international teammate Mario Gotze.

As such, in the summer of 2014, Kroos moved to Real Madrid.

But speaking on beIN Sports over the weekend, Moyes declared that Kroos would instead have been heading to United had he remained in place.

“During the season I had met Toni Kroos," said Moyes.

"And he agreed that he would come to Manchester United before he went to Real Madrid.

“But somewhere in there, I lost my job and Toni chose to go elsewhere.”

Moyes also revealed that United had a helicopter on standby for Gareth Bale, as United looked to usurp Madrid to land the Welshman during the Scot's first transfer window.

“By the time we got to the end of the transfer window we always thought we had a chance of getting Gareth Bale.

“We hoped we could talk him out of going to Real Madrid, because already it was sort of half done. We offered more money, we had tried to entice him.

Asked whether United had a helicopter on standby to get the Welshman, Moyes said: “We did. We did. We had it and we tried.”
