Derick Kivia, 55, had planned to partner with his brother and start some projects at their home in Kakamega.

Mr Kivia held dual citizenship and has been a Canadian citizen since 2003.

He perished in the ill-fated Nairobi-bound flight from Ethiopia.

Douglas Lugi, a brother of the deceased, said they received the tragic news on Sunday.

Linet Odanga, Kivia’s sister-in-law, said her husband had a lengthy talk with Kivia on Thursday and agreed that when he arrives, they were to initiate some development projects that would bring the family some income.

“Now that he is dead, we don’t know whether the projects they were to launch with my husband will go on. He was to give the bigger percentage of the initial capital,” said Ms Odanga.

Tom Mwelesa, another brother, said Kivia was last visited home in 2016.
