Officials from the Kisumu City Inspectorate have ordered tenants to vacate a three-storey building after it collapsed yesterday.

Three houses in the residential building located at Kona Mbuta in Manyatta caved in at 10am as one of its cracked pillars was being repaired.

Nobody was injured in the incident as most of the occupants were at work.

City Manager Doris Ombara said they were looking for the owner of the building, adding that he had been identified as an Administration Police officer based in Mariakani.

“We want to summon him as we try to establish reasons for the collapse of the building,” said Ms Ombara.

She said reports showed that the building was constructed in 2015, but there was no clear information whether it had been approved.

“From the preliminary observations, you can see that works on the building were not up to standard. We will want to follow up and find out where things went wrong,” Ombara said.

The tenants were blocked from accessing the building despite requests that they recover important documents such as academic certificates from their houses.
