Aisha Jumwa's fate with registrar of parties

The fate of Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa (above) now lies with Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu after ODM submitted documents expelling the lawmaker to her office.

The party said it followed the procedure of removing a truant member from its register and that it was now up to Nderitu to strike out Jumwa's name and notify the electoral commission.

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s party conformed to ODM's constitution, Political Parties Act and other relevant laws to expel Jumwa.

“She is no longer a member of the party. We have written to the Registrar of Political Parties and anyone who has issues with the process we have should go to court,” said Sifuna.

He said once the NDC has ratified expulsion of a member, the party only notifies the registrar of its decision and should the registrar require any other document(s) they will be willing to provide them.

“Our understanding is we only write to the registrar to notify her. Should she request other documents, we will be more willing to avail them. “We will also write to Jumwa about the party's decision,” said Sifuna.

This the second time ODM is trying to expel a member. A similar process flopped when a court ruled the party did not follow due process in removing former secretary general Ababu Namwamba and former Kilifi North MP Gideon Mungaro.

However, Sifuna said they had sealed all loopholes. He said they had even given Jumwa and her Msambweni counterpart Suleiman Dori a fair hearing.
