Police hold suspect in probe on trader's killing last month

Police yesterday arrested a man suspected to be connected to the killing of a prominent businessman.

George Mutunga was killed on January 7, 2019, at Kasarani estate, Kambu, a few meters from his home. The killing triggered street protests that saw the Mombasa-Nairobi highway blocked for hours.

The suspect was arrested outside the Makindu law courts, where he had gone for another case in which he has been charged with robbery.

Makueni Police Commander Joseph Naipeiyan said the arrest was made after a review of call records on the businessman's mobile phone.

“We did an analysis of call data which led us to the suspect," he said

Officers said the suspect, who is locked up at Makindu police station, will be arraigned once investigations are complete.

Police said the arrest was a breakthrough in the fight against rising crime in the town located along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

Last week, a watchman at a night club was killed. The club’s manager is nursing serious injuries at the Makunei Level 4 Hospital.

Elsewhere, police yesterday shot a suspected thief at Kalahari in Changamwe. Four other people escaped. Changamwe police boss Peter Omanwa said the suspects, who had stolen motor vehicle parts, were confronted by police.

In Kisauni, police are holding a suspected drug dealer.

Kisauni OCPD Christopher Limo said a security team raided the suspect's house at around 2am yesterday and found 50 grammes of cocaine and several rolls of bhang.
