Man charged with stealing from ‘Good Samaritan’

A man has been charged with stealing a mobile phone and money from a woman who had bought him lunch.

Martin Omondi was accused of stealing Sh7,000 from Sarah Were on December 14.

He is also accused of stealing a Samsung phone, kikoi and a purse, all worth Sh16,000.

The prosecution said Omondi met Were at Maisha Matt Supermarket where he pretended he was a truck driver and was new in Kakamega.

He is alleged to have told the complainant he was hungry and stranded in town before requesting that Were buys him food.

“The complainant heeded the request and accompanied the accused to a nearby cafeteria where she bought him food. As they were eating, the complainant went to the counter to enquire about the bill but on coming back, she found her belongings missing," State Counsel Hilda Omondi told the court.

Perturbed for losing her phone, money and kikoi, Were reported the matter at Kakamega Central Police Station.

Omondi was arrested a few days later after the complainant spotted him near the same supermarket when he called the investigating officer and the stolen items recovered.

When he appeared before Kakamega Senior Resident Magistrate Erick Malesi, Omondi said part of the prosecution facts was true and part of it was false.

“The court has noted the accused has denied the charges,” said Malesi.

He granted the accused Sh10,000 bond with a surety of similar amount.

The case will be mentioned on December 28 and heard on February 12.
