Court warns media over coverage of Monica’s murder case

Justice James Wakiaga on Wednesday warned the media against sensational reporting on Monica Kimani’s murder case.

The court warned that this may jeopardise the case, Wakiaga reiterating that he does not like to be influenced before hearing a case.

“I’m an old-school judge and I do not like it when I’m influenced before I hear a case…media should guard against what to put,” he said.

The prosecution team was also asked whether it had been leaking details of the case to the media but Public Prosecutor Catherine Mwaniki denied any knowledge of such.

She further stated that some media reports could water down their case against the two suspects.

Meanwhile, Jacque Maribe and her fiancé Joseph Irungu will remain in police custody till Wednesday, October 24, when they will be taken back for bail hearing.

Justice Wakiaga made the ruling at Milimani Law Courts, granting seven days for the preparation of bail report, instructing those involved to share it with the defence team by Tuesday, October 23.

Maribe is being detained at the Langata Women Prison while Irungu is held at the Industrial Area Remand Prison in Nairobi.

The journalist was declared mentally fit to take plea following an assessment ordered by the court.

Last week Justice Lesiit cleared Irungu to seek medical attention for treatment of a bullet wound on his chest and he is set to receive more treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
