Like fine wine, Ndegwa, 93, gets better with age as Home golfer Walter Starzock claims Madison title

Home golfer Walter Starzock may have survived a countback to win the 2018 Madison Insurance golf tournament at the Nyali Golf and Country Club on Saturday, but former Central Bank Governor Duncan Ndegwa wrote his own headlines.

The 93-year-old golfer, playing off handicap 24, was the senior winner on 31 points, while the club’s  handicap 22 Allyssa Jamal, on 35 points, claimed the Junior prize.

Playing off handicap 15, Starzock posted a countback score of 39 stableford points to emerge the overall winner in the one-day stableford tournament that was sponsored by Madison Insurance Company.

Despite posting mixed bogey shots in 11 holes, Starzock recovered in good time to play level pars on the rest of both nines and beat a team of 130 golfers.

“I had a good day and enjoyed some splendid flights. I am extremely happy to have won the event and thank the sponsors,” said Starzock.

He tied on points with club mate handicap 15 Ian Marshall, who was the men winner. Handicap 6, Charles Rob, was the runner-up with 38 points.

Mombasa club’s handicap 21 Mary Kandu was the Lady winner on 36 points.

M Wanyoike, on 28 points was the Sponsor’s guest winner, while Karen’s Stanley  Karanja, on 18 points, was the Staff winner.

At the par 72 Royal Nairobi course, home golfer handicap 19 Lucas Oluoch won the Sunset Charity tournament on 35 points.

Handicap 6 Morris Njue was the runner-up on 34 points, while club-mate handicap 28 Anthony Juma posted 34 points to claim the third slot.

At the par 72 Ruiru course, home golfer handicap 27 Ernest Waithaka posted 72 nett to win the April 2018 Monthly mug tournament.

Club-mate Kenneth Waruingi, playing off handicap 23, carded 74 nett to lift the men’s winner prize, while handicap 31 Veronica Mwaura was the Lady winner on 76 nett.

At Muthaiga, Edwin Kinyua carded 40 points to win the 2018 Jonnie Walker series.
