There were more road crash deaths last November and December than the previous year, a transport safety agency has revealed.

Latest data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicates that 356 persons died in December while 240 died in November.

In 2016, 289 people died in December and 190 in November.

Some of the accidents that contributed to increased fatalities include the Kamkuywa crash in Bungoma County, where 19 people died, and collisions along the Nairobi-Nakuru-Eldoret highway that claimed almost 50 lives.

Most of the accidents happened at the Salgaa, Sachangwan and Migaa black spots.

March, April and May last year recorded an increase in fatalities at 19, 10 and 13 respectively.

According to the data released on January 8, a total of 2,919 persons died in road accidents in 2017 compared to 2,965 in 2016.

Out of all road user categories, 773 passengers died in 2017 compared to 723 in 2016.

However, NTSA noted reduced fatalities in other categories - 1,060 pedestrians died (less by 37), 314 drivers (less by 37), 715 motorcyclists (less by seven) and 57 pedal cyclists, which was less by 15.

With 1,060 deaths, pedestrians still led in the number of fatalities among road users.
