The Director of Public Prosecutions has ordered probe into the shooting of a protestor and a hit and run incident on other protestors on Monday in Nairobi.

DPP Keriako Tobiko wrote to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro on Tuesday and ordered that a probe be conducted into both incidents.

“This is therefore to direct that you cause thorough and speedy investigations into the incident and forward the resultant inquiry file to the DPP for perusal and directions,” said deputy DPP Nicholas Mutuku in a letter to the DCI.

He said they had learnt that a protester was shot and injured while others were hit and injured by a speeding motorist.

The incident happened during anti- IEBC protests in the city on Monday.

The man who was shot during the protests was placed under police guard at Kenyatta Hospital.

According to a police report, Arthur Jackton Alava was shot in the right hand after he and three other men, robbed a pedestrian near Laico Regency hotel.

Police say three of his accomplices who are in police custody. According to police, the suspects fled on a motorbike after the robbery and were intercepted near Community bus stage after officers, also on a motorcycle gave chase.

A police constable was also injured after he fell off the motorcycle. He was treated and discharged at Nairobi West Hospital. Police said Zebedeyo Vixson Jakait lost a bag containing a laptop, a mobile phone and Sh6,500 during the incident. The stolen items were recovered and preserved as exhibits. The motorcycle was also detained at Central Police Station. Police said one of the officers was forced to shoot because the fleeing men had refused orders to surrender after they were intercepted.

The motorist George Githimu Muriuki, hit two of the protesters as he sped off from the scene. He reported the matter at the Central Police Station.

But witnesses said the man who shot the protester was in the four wheel drive car, which contracts the police version. Police are still investigating the incident.

A witness said an armed man stepped out of the car and shot the victim once before kicking him and jumped back as the vehicle sped off.
