Mombasa man claims to love woman after being charged with groping her

A man accused of groping a woman in public on Tuesday claimed he was propelled to do so by her stunning beauty and uncontrollable attraction to her.

Alexander Mbondo told a court in Mombasa that he was smitten with the woman and proclaimed willingness to “marry her instantly” if she agreed to his proposal. But the woman, a mother of two, said she is happily married.

According to police, Mr Mbondo touched the woman inappropriately twice at a bus stage and inside a shop.

He was arrested after she raised the alarm during one of the attacks. Mbondo told Senior Resident Magistrate Henry Nyakweba that the woman rejected his advances for friendship or marriage.

“I have undying love for her and I can’t stop myself because of the beauty and I am ready to marry her any time she accepts my proposals,” he told the magistrate who appeared stunned by the suspect’s audacity as the people in court burst into laughter.

Yesterday, the woman testified against the accused and explained her torment and frustration during the alleged attacks.

Loves him

Mbondo, who has no lawyer and has been in prison since last year due to inability to secure a Sh20,000 bond, claimed he believed the woman loved him and had an opportunity to cross-examine her.

“Will I be lying to the court if I tell the court that I am in love with you and if I propose you will say yes,” asked Mbondo, to which the woman answered; “I have no time and feelings for you.”

Mbondo is accused of having committed the offence between April and September 2016 at Coat Drapers in Fontanella Building in Mombasa.

He has denied the charges.

On Tuesday, while testifying, the woman told the court that she had no feelings for Mbondo who she accused of frustrating and stalking her.

She said she was happily married with two children and wanted nothing to do with Mbondo.

She said she met Mbondo for the first when he came to buy a shirt at the stall where she sells clothes.

“I thought he was just a customer looking to buy a shirt and I brought him to the stall to sample the shirts. After that he started coming frequently, asking me to marry him and always touching me inappropriately,” she said.

Her employer told the court he had on several occasions witnessed Mbondo frustrating the woman at her workplace.

He said he had warned Mbondo to keep off the premises and pursue her somewhere off the work place.

Stalked her

He said that Mbondo had been arrested four times by police for stalking his employee.

He said he or his son were forced to escort her to the stage because Mbondo was always outside waiting for her.

“She is someone’s wife and he was disturbing her. I knew her husband because he always came to pick her up and she had told me so,” said the employer.

But Mbondo claimed the employer was jealous because he was making major strides in seducing her.
