Kenya is on course to host next year’s Africa Nations Championships, the Government has said.

Sports Principal Secretary Kirimi Kaberia said: “We meet the CAF (Confederation of African Football) vice president this week and gave him all the assurances he needed, especially in regard to the electoral process. We also shared with him the progress we have made and we believe he was satisfied. In this regard we are sure that the tournament is still ours to host,” he said.

Kaberia said good progress has been made on the venues to host the tournament and said the ministry would give the public a weekly update as the upgrade continues.

“Behind the scenes, a lot has been going on and everything should be ready within the required timelines. In future we have learnt the need to have facilities ready early every time we bid to host major tournaments,” he said.

The third and final inspection by CAF will begin on Monday and will run for eight days, as confirmed by Football Kenya Federation.

The inspection will be led by CAF vice president Constance Omari, who was in Kenya last week and met top Sports Ministry officials, who assured him of the country’s security for the tour.

The initial inspection was to be conducted from this Thursday but was put off after CAF expressed concern over the country’s political situation following the Supreme Court’s annulling of the election of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
