Governors Kiraitu Murungi (Meru) and Mohamed Kuti (Isiolo) will Friday take the inaugural commercial flight to the newly-opened Isiolo International Airport.

The airport, which is one of the mega Vision 2030 flagship projects, will officially start operations with the inaugural flight that is expected to touch down at 11am.

“Among the distinguished passengers in the maiden Fly-SAX flight will be the Meru governor accompanied by several other dignitaries,” said Kiraitu's communications director, Patrick Muriungi, Thursday.

Hussein Salesa from Isiolo Communications Directorate also confirmed that Mr Kuti would be on the inaugural flight.

The airline is charging Sh6,600 for a one-way ticket from Nairobi's Wilson Airport to Isiolo, with three flights a week on Monday, Friday and Sunday.

Meru County in particular sees the airport as an important air cargo handling facility for miraa exports.

“Governor Kiraitu Murungi was a member of the famous National Economic Social Council that conceived Vision 2030 under former President Mwai Kibaki,” said Mr Muriungi.

The two counties are yet to reach an agreement on the sharing of proceeds from business licences and permits at the airport, which was commissioned one month ago.
