Two million pilgrims gone to Mecca for Hajj

The Hajj is an annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca which is considered to be the most holy city of the Muslims. Hajj is considered to be one of the five pillars of the Islamic faith and that is why it is a mandatory religious duty for all Muslims that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime. The journey to Mecca is however, for adult Muslims who are physically and financially capable of undertaking the journey.

Muslims on Sunday 27 August converged at the Mecca and according to Abdelmajeed Mohammed Al-Afghani, director of hajj and Umra (lesser pilgrimage), two million pilgrims will be expected at Mecca.

The worst disaster ever happened in the history of Hajj saw 464 people from the Islamic republic dead.
