Man commits suicide in police cell toilet

A 26-year-old man is alleged to have hanged himself today around 9:30 am in a toilet within police cells at Sultan-Hamud Police Station in Makueni County.

James Mbondo Siliya, 26, had been arrested on August 22 at Kasikeu Sub-County in Kilome Constituency after he threatened to slash his mother into pieces with a panga before the community informed the police.

According to the area police boss Mr. Charles Muthui, James had been arraigned in court on August 23, and charged of issuing death threats to his mother where he pleaded not guilty and the court subsequently denied him a bond citing that he may harm his mother once released.

"Mr. Mbondo was denied a bond since he was still a threat to the life of his mother and detained at Sutlan Hamud station, his death could have been provoked by the court's ruling that denied him a bond", said Mr. Muthui.

The OCPD said that the man used his shirt to hang himself in a toilet adjacent to the cells.

"He secluded himself from the rest of the detainees, went to the toilets and in deception that he was bathing hanged himself using his shirt", the police boss told the standard.

After the incident the inmates alerted the police officers who took his body to Makindu Sub-County hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem.
