Chama Cha Mashinani party agent arrested for allegedly holding illegal meetings

Bomet Governor and Chama Cha Mashinani party leader Isaac Ruto.

Bomet Governor and NASA co-principal Isaac Ruto has lashed out at police for arresting a Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) agent in Chepalungu.

Ruto termed the arrest as a ploy to harass his party officials overseeing the election.

Speaking after casting his vote at Chebaraa primary School in Chepalungu, Governor Isaac Ruto demanded the immediate release of Alex Kirui saying what he was doing was within the law.

"The party officials was issuing out letters to party agents and we wonder what crime he did to deserve the arrest. This must be a scheme to harass our officials and we condemn it," Ruto said.

He also questioned why police confiscated the letters that were being issued and as well as money meant to pay the agents.

Kirui was arrested at Chebunyo Boys High School in Chepalungu last night.

He has been locked up at Bomet police station with police county commandant Lea Kithei saying officers were investigating the incident.

"The official is still with us pending investigation," Ms Kithei confirmed.

He said officers were working on the case to establish the motive of the night meeting.

Ruto however said it was absurd that the police have termed the party officials meeting illegal saying they were racing against time.

"Like IEBC were busy distributing polling material CCM officials who were arrested were also doing their duty within the law and they did not warrant such treatment," he said

There was commotion between the supporters and the police last night at the Bomet police station where supporters had stormed in in efforts to free the arrested official.
