?The electoral agency’s punitive fines imposed on politicians perpetuating chaos has not curbed the vice.
With a record Sh15.4 million extracted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) through fines, including suspension of campaigns in some areas, the commission is still dealing with repeat offenders.
Party symbols
Despite the punishment meted out, complaints of candidates and their supporters engaging in violence and plagiarising party symbols and logos continue to swamp the IEBC Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee.
On Thursday, Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka and his main rival, Wycliffe Wangamati, both repeat offenders, suffered a blow when the Wafula Chebukati-led committee suspended their campaigns for the remaining period.
Lusaka was the worst hit after he was slapped with Sh1 million fine although he is the one who lodged the complaint against Wangamati.
In the first case, which was also filed by the governor, both candidates were both fined Sh1 million for electoral violence.
The supporters of the two candidates for the Bungoma governor’s seat clashed at the burial of Robert Baraza in Kimilili, Tongaren Constituency. Baraza, Lusaka’s chief campaigner, was shot by unknown assailants.
Two other offenders who suffered the same fate are Laikipia East MP Antony Mutahi and Monica Muthoni Marubu, who were each fined Sh250,000 and Sh500,000 respectively.

Independent candidates
The two, running as independent candidates, were found in breach of the Electoral Code of Conduct for using President Uhuru Kenyatta’s portrait and Jubilee Party (JP) colours and symbols.
Marubu, who is running for the Lamu woman representative seat, had been initially fined Sh350,000 for the same offence.
She has been barred from campaigning for the remaining period.
Kasarani MP John Njoroge (independent) was lucky, only being ordered to pull down all materials bearing Uhuru’s portrait.
