Regional Committee of Churches warn on return of gangs

The Regional Committee of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has warned of a surge in criminal gangs as the country heads to the August 8 polls.

The committee said the gangs, particularly in informal settlements, were being resurrected by politicians to attack other candidates and recruit spies.

According to the committee, the gangs are out to evict communities perceived to be political enemies.

The committee expressed concern about the evictions and exodus of tenants from some residential estates.

"Landlords are forcing tenants to move out while in other areas, tenants are leaving for fear of election violence," they said.
