GOtv action: AFC seek quarters slot in Thika

AFC Leopards will be seeking to make it to the quarter-finals of the GOtv Shield when they tackle Bidco United at Camp Toyoyo Stadium today.

Seven teams - Eldoret Youth, Tusker, Kariobangi Sharks, Bandari, Wazito, Vihiga United, and Sony Sugar - have made it to the quarter-finals after the weekend matches.

Leopards last won the GOtv title in 2013. The team has also struggled in the league and the Shield remains their best hope for silverware.

Leopards will be hoping that the Robert Matano magic will work in inspiring the team to their first silverware since 2013. The veteran coach took over at Leopards three weeks ago and engineered their first win in eight matches after the team beat Bandari 1-0 away in a Kenyan Premier League match.

Ahead of the fixture, Matano insists they must build consistency in their campaign. “It is was good that we won this match because the players’ confidence was beginning to dip. But now that is behind us and what is important is to keep on winning. That is why qualifying for the quarter-finals is important for us,” he said.

Leopards have been boosted by the return of Ugandan midfielder Allan Katerega, who has not been available.

The team also has experienced goalkeeper Ian Otieno, who will be key if the match goes to penalties. [Gilbert Wandera]
