A school in Samburu County that was shut a month ago after male pupils attacked female teachers has been reopened.

Kirimon Primary School in Samburu Central sub-county was closed indefinitely on June 19, 2017, after male pupils injured five female teachers for punishing them in front of girls.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has transferred all the 13 teachers, including the headmaster.

The school was reopened after TSC posted one teacher to the institution.

Samburu County TSC Director Suleman Odipo said the commission had considered the plight of the more than 750 pupils.

Mr Odipo said a headteacher had been posted to the school and was working closely with untrained teachers employed by the school's board of management.

FURTHER CONSULTATIONS

"Although we had decided not to post any teachers to the school, after further consultations we decided to reopen the institution to secure the future of the pupils,'' said Odipo.

The director noted that Samburu County had only 1,195 teachers spread across 164 primary schools.

"The pupil:teacher ratio in Samburu county lies at 1:40 and we are working to reach the required standards," he added.

He said it would take time for the school to get all the required teachers since TSC had recruited only 52 teachers from Samburu.

"But once the teachers are posted here, I will send a one-off bunch to Kirimon Primary School," he said.

He added that some teachers were willing to be transferred to Kirimon.

"I cannot grant their wishes because some of those who want to be sent to the school are currently teaching in hardship areas and there will be no replacement for them," he said.
