Free parking as county workers' strike continues

Parking in the city centre was free yesterday and hawkers could occupy any spot without fear as county workers boycotted work.

Services were paralysed at  City Hall for the second day, with workers demanding their June salaries. All sections were closed to the public except the cash office.

"The only office that is opened now is the cash office. We do not want to stop money from coming in because that is what we are protesting over right now, but other offices are closed and the workers are here," said Kenya County Government Workers Union Secretary Boniface Waweru.

Offices that were not offering services included the City Engineering Department, Garbage Collection Department, Parking Attendants and the Land Rates office.

Dennis Otieno from Karen came to the Land Rates office to find out how much he was supposed to pay for his property, only to find the office closed. He was told to go home as the offices were not offering any services.

"I needed to know how much I am expected to pay, but there is no one to serve me," said Mr Otieno.
