The mother of a 13-year-old minor who was defiled and later killed fainted at a Mombasa court after the suspects were set free. Jamal Salim, Mohammed Hassan and Daudi Mwachiro, who had been charged with gang-rape in 2015, were set free by Mombasa Principal Magistrate Henry Nyakweba.

In his ruling, the magistrate blamed the DPP for carrying out shoddy investigations. Mr Nyakweba said the evidence recorded by investigating officer Joyce Okumu prior to the minor's death was "hearsay".
