Makueni County to automate revenue collection by July

The Makueni County government plans to automate all transactions related to revenue collection and payments starting this month.

The move is expected to seal corruption loopholes. Governor Kivutha Kibwana said during the launch of the Emali modern bus park at the weekend that real time revenue collection would help the county government boost revenue collection.

“The system is time-conscious, with the payments made reflecting immediately in the collection system,” said Prof Kibwana.

 The governor seems to have bowed to pressure from the county assembly that had called for the introduction of an automated system to ensure efficiency and accountability in revenue collection.

The county government, Kibwana said, was also in the final stages of introducing a customer’s portal that will eventually see the introduction of Internet banking in making payments. In the 2013/2014 financial year, the county government collected Sh189 million, with the figure rising to Sh220 million in the 2015/2016 financial year.

The Governor said introduction of the new electronic payment system would boost business in all major towns.
