Where students eat well cheaply in Nairobi

A short walk from the University of Nairobi hostels leads to the famous Klub 36, which serves hundreds of students and staff who work around the area. If you are craving affordable food and your wallet is begging for a break, then this is the joint for you.

Located just behind State House and the hostels, Klub 36 may not have fancy restaurants, but the pocket-friendly food is what keeps the customers coming. The roofs are made out of corrugated iron sheets and the bench is a little uncomfortable to sit on, but that does nothing to deter the loyal customers who keep coming.

While concerns have been raised over the cleanliness of the food joints, the students insist that it is clean food. Okal Paul, who frequents one of the establishments, says it is the fresh food that makes this his joint.

“Most restaurants can even serve you food from the previous day, but here the food gets finished. So it is fresh every day,” he says.

Okal says the fact that the food sells at an affordable price is the biggest motivator.

“Where else can you eat chapati and stew for under Sh100?” he asks.

Annette Yegon, who resides in a nearby hostel, says since she cannot cook inside the hostels, it has become expensive to find an alternative other than ‘klabu’. I can’t cook in the hostels and I can’t eat in town with the money I have  so I do not have an option if I want three meals in a day, she says. [Nasibo Kabale]
