Kakamega High School’s Green Commandos were off to a flying start as this year’s Western Region Secondary Schools Term Two B Games began at Bungoma High School yesterday.

The former national champions announced their intentions with a 4-0 win over Kamusinde of Bungoma County in their Group B opener.

A brace each from Henry Juma and Joshua Otieno was enough to give the 12-time national champions their dream start.

Kakamega are eyeing the regional title, which will earn them a ticket to the national games set for July 3-8 in Nyeri. Kakamega last won the national title in 2014, but have not featured at the nationals since.

Coach Brendan Mwinamo said his charges were yearning to return to the nationals.

“Our objective is to return to the nationals and fight for our honour. The boys are motivated by the Under-16s side that won this year's national title,” Mwinamo said.

In Machakos, champions Kathungi beat St Daniel's of Tharaka Nithi 3-1. Meanwhile, champions Laiser Hill Academy defeated Simotwo 2-0 in boys' football to qualify for the semi-finals in the Rift Valley regional games at Kabarnet High School.

Laiser Hill scored in the second minute through Richard Odanda and Musa Masika (65th minute). They will play St Anthony's of Trans Nzoia in the semis. [Additional reporting by Ben Ahenda]
