Former national secondary school boys' football silver medallists Tononoka are among favourites at this year's Coast Region secondary schools Term Two B games that start today.

Tononoka play Lamu Boys as the fight for slots to the national championships gets underway at Kilifi Township School.

Tononoka, who will be representing Mombasa County, will take advantage of the absence of former champions Green Palm Academy in the chase for glory.

Green Palm did not field a team at the sub-county and county levels.

Tononoka coach Juma Kaloto is optimistic of posting good results in the three-day games. The Mombasa representatives will also play Kenyatta Mwatate of Taita Taveta and Kilifi's representatives Galana in other pool A matches.

In pool B, Mombasa's Kajembe, Ramisi (Kwale), ACK Cannon Mweri of Taita Taveta and Garsen from Tana River will battle for the slots. Two top teams will advance to the semi-finals.

Girls' national football champions St John's Kaloleni face an acid test as they defend their regional title. St John's coach Joseph Oyoo has admitted that he knows it will be a tough task because he has a new team.
