Athletics: Kenyans shine in Bengaluru race

 

Alex Korio and Irene Cheptai made it a Kenyan double at the TCS World 10K Bengaluru 2017 race, winning at the 10th edition of this IAAF Bronze Label Road Race in 28:12 and 31:51 respectively at the weekend. Cheptai caught the eye in particular with an impressive performance that will confirm her rising status in distance running and reinforce the belief that she can be among the medallists at the IAAF World Championships in London in August.  [Michael Chepkwony]

Schools: Kwale Girls in tough pool at games

Coast girls' Under-16 football champions Kwale Girls High School are keen on winning the national title when the games, slated for June 6 to 12, begin in Mombasa. Coach Mukasa Amboko said his team is in a tough group, but added that he is optimistic of winning the title. Kwale are in pool A alongside former champions Wiyeta, Nyakach, and Utithi. "We know Wiyeta are strong but they have not beaten a Coast team since 2015 and we will not allow them to beat us at home," said Amboko. Women Football: Vihiga cement league lead after big win

Vihiga Queens took control of the Football Kenya Federation's Women Premier League Zone B after a 7-0 win over Nyamira Starlets at Mumias Complex at the weekend. Vihiga, who have scored 25 goals from four rounds of matches, picked up from where they left off in the third round, with Cythia Shiwatso and Maureen Ater grabbing a hat-trick each and Euphrasia Afwayi scoring once to take their tally to 12 points. Speaking after the match, Vihiga Queens coach Alex Alumira said they are having a good season and their training has contributed to the results. "There's better understanding in the squad."
