Referee uses video technology to issue red card

The first red card using video technology

New video technology came to the international stage on Friday when Argentina striker Lautaro Martinez was sent off against England in the World Under-20 finals in South Korea.

England were leading 2-0 when Martinez came on as a substitute on the hour.

But seventeen minutes later, he was shown the red card by referee Abdulla Hassan Mohamed.

Seconds earlier, Martinez had emerged with the ball after a touchline tussle with Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori. Martinez went on to have a shot that was deflected and saved by Freddie Woodman.

But the video panel used in this tournament alerted the official to the challenge by Martinez on Tomori, who had claimed he was the victim of the use of an elbow. The referee reviewed the incident and sent off Martinez.

FIFA are using the technology in this tournament, having previously indicated their readiness to use it in Russia 2018.
