EALA exposes nepotism in Jubilee and NASA

East African Legislative Assembly (EALA)

The proposal by National Super Alliance to nominate their kin to East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) has exposed the height of nepotism in Opposition and State actors.

Jubilee criticised Opposition’s choice of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s son Kennedy and Raila Odinga’s elder brother Oburu Odinga to the Assembly. The backlash forced Dr Oburu to pull out.

Last week, Deputy President William Ruto told off the Opposition for nepotism.

“They always tell us that they don’t want tribalism, but you are practising nepotism,” Ruto said.

Leader of Majority Aden Duale who has vowed to block Musyoka’s son said: “You cannot reinstate your sons, your girlfriends ... We will ensure that they do not pass through Parliament.”

But Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula said NASA found it disturbing that Ruto had an issue with the Opposition nominees, yet the State had committed similar crimes.

“Mr Ruto has never found it necessary to condemn the unilateral appointments by Jubilee that has seen relatives, friends, sons and daughters of top leaders employed in influential positions for no reason other than kinship and friendship,” Wetang’ula said.

The Opposition said the DP’s daughter, June Ruto, secured a junior diplomatic appointment at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The President appointed Jomo Gecaga, who is his nephew as the Private Secretary, while his niece Nana Gecaga is the managing director of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.

Opposition leaders have questioned how Nana got the job.

“Under the Jubilee administration, the President’s niece Nana Gecaga was appointed the MD of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre. In addition,  children and relatives of the President and his deputy have been posted in our foreign missions for no special qualifications other than kinship,” Wetang’ula said.

Leader of Majority Aden Duale’s brother is a member of the board of directors at the Kenya Revenue Authority while his brother in-law Dr Ibrahim Mohamed is the PS ministry of Mining.

In the same vein, Raila was also accused of perpetrating nepotism after his sister Wena Akinyi was appointed Kenya’s Consulate General in Los Angeles, USA.
