Kenya joins the world in celebrating World Press Freedom Day

Today is World Press Freedom day. It is a day meant to raise the awareness of how important the freedom of the press is and also to remind world governments about their duty to uphold and respect the right to freedom of expression.

Press freedom in many countries has gone through challenges as to whether the press is indeed free to air what they want and how they want it. Governments have been an obstacle to the press, with journalists all over the world being gagged, detained or even imprisoned for what they have posted online or published in the newspaper.

Kenya joins the world in celebrating this day and many have gone to online platforms to express their feelings on how journalists (press) should be treated.

Here is what Kenyans on twitter have to say about World Press Freedom day:

 - elmi mohammed @elmimohaKE -We must free ourselves as individual journalists then we can go out & report free & fair stories @MediaCouncilK #WorldPressFreedomDay

- Justus Tharao? @justustharao - I declare with all certainty that media will offer to Kenyans world class coverage of the elections

- Lone Felix? @lonefelix The liberty of the press is essential to the security of freedom in a state-JA #WorldPressFreedomDay Salute, to all guardians of freedom!

- Adhere Cavince? @Cavinceworld - Journalism is printing what someone else does not want printed: everything else is public relations ~ George Orwell #WorldPressFreedomDay
