Why Gor Mahia should embrace SuperSport's divorce with KPL

At Gor Mahia, we should look at the withdrawal of SuperSport's sponsorship of the Kenya Premier League (KPL) as a God-given opportunity.

There has been much talk following news that the South African company will no longer sponsor or televise Kenya Premier League matches.  A lot of theories were put forth trying to explain the drastic move, but after the company walked out on Nigeria few weeks later, then it was obvious that it was a business issue.

This notwithstanding, the action has several repercussions- the "sofa set" branch members are suddenly left with no access to TV matches.

The clubs are left with a gaping financial hole to plug - as much as Sh6-8m per season for the big ones like Gor.

The players and clubs are bereft of the much valued national and international exposure that comes with their matches being beamed live on television.

Now, imagine if Gor Mahia were to auction their national and international rights for live broadcasts? Based on K'Ogalo's potential viewership, the amounts involved would fetch about Sh15-20m shillings, conservatively.

This is at least three to five times what the club is estimated to have received from SuperSport. Imagine what that amount can do to a community club? A lot!

On matters young players, my sister from the Den, Monica, in a rejoinder to my piece about K'Ogalo's history of promoting young talent said Michael Olunga was not made by K'Ogalo.

She went further to say that he (Olunga) came to Gor on loan, having sojourned through Tusker and Thika.

Hitherto, and as Monique clearly pointed out, he had scored about 12 goals in competitive matches for the two sides; Thika and Tusker in 41 appearances. But do not forget that he scored about twice that while at Gor Mahia in half the appearances.

It's indisputable that K'Ogalo groomed the boy, gave the raw Olunga some sensible value addition, as it has always been doing to other youngsters since 1968!!

My sister Monica and readers will agree that a well mixed, oiled, kneaded and rolled dough is not Chapati, until it is cooked! What the Swedish club saw was not Olunga of Tusker or Thika, but a K'Ogalo powered Michael Olunga! Youngsters please take note!

Oops, I having been concentrating so much on the table trying to locate our Shemejis. Last week I inadvertently attributed AFC Leopard's league statistics to K'Ogalo's. The correct position is that we had then chalked up four wins and one loss out of expected five wins!

The title race continues.
