MUTETI SPLASHES TO GLORY: Swimmer sets three national records in Mombasa

Three national records were broken as Mombasa-based swimmer Emily Muteti of Mombasa Aquatic Swim Club erased her two national marks during the Coast Age Group swimming gala at Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa.

Muteti who has represented Kenya in several international swimming championships erased her own record in girls' 16 years All Comers in 400m Individual Medley (IM) of five minutes 10.90 set on October 14, 2015. The new record stands at 5.05.90.

She was in her own class after she erased her 200m IM All Comers record of 2.27.94 that she set on November 7, 2015 to register a new record of 2.25.94.

The third record to fall was in boys' 14/15 years 100m freestyle category when Danilo Rosafio of Mombasa Academy erased the previous record of 54.62 set by Tory Pragassa on October 13, 2012 to register a new national record of 53.65.

Bandari Swim Club swimmers had a field day as the gala entered the second day yesterday.

Suleiman Mohammed of Bandari clocked 17.41.21 to win the boys' 16 years and over 1,500m freestyle.

He went ahead to grab the boys' 16 years and over 400m freestyle title with a time of 4.28.50 with Nobby Obuya of Shree Swaminarayan Academy coming second after clocking 4.33.90.

Aga Khan Academy’s Ivan Hart and Sathyam Gohil clocked 5.52.40 and 6.21.51 in boys' 10/11 years 400m freestyle. Aheer Chatterjee of Aga Khan Academy won the boys' 12/13 years 400m freestyle with a time of 4.55.03 and also won the boys' 12/13 years 1,500m freestyle with a time of 19.13.03.

In the girls' 12/13 years 400m IM, Tiana Vora of Aga Khan Academy won with a time of 5.51.75. She also won the girls' 12/13 years 400m freestyle after clocking 5.12.16 and beating Bandari’s Lanisha Kitendo to the second position in 5.20.09.

In mixed 10/11 years 200m medley relay, Aga Khan Academy team of Sathyam Gohil, Mayana Kioko, Ivan Hart and Gakenya Mwige clocked 2.50.34 for the top position while Oshwal Academy’s team of Vivian Hillier, Deeya Shah, Hamza Tung and Jordan Thuranira clocked 2.58.68 for the second position.

In mixed 16 years and over 200m medley relay, Shree Swaminarayan Academy swimmers Nobby Obuya, Wanjiru Markert, Maahir Harunani and Paige De’souza topped with a time of 2.36.23.

The three-day championships, which started on Friday with close to 300 swimmers in action, concludes today.
