Judge and 12 others in race for top IEBC job

Hight Court judge Anyara Emukule is among 13 people seeking to become electoral commission chairman.

Also in the race to succeed Issack Hassan at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board vice-chair Roseline Odhiambo Odede.

A former member of the defunct Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) Murshid Abdalla has also shown interest in the post alongside former Football Kenya Federation election board member and advocate David Mareka and former Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission member Margaret W N Wambui.

Others are Andrew Franklin, a security expert, Joshua Kamwere Wanjiku, David Malakwen, Dr John Malakwen, John Tentemo Moyaki, Michael Mugo, Musoma Arthur Munubi and Vincent Opar.

Emukule was appointed High Court Judge in 2003 and is set to retire in December after attaining the age of 70. He is currently serving in Mombasa where he moved after serving in Nakuru County in the same position.

Defunct Transition Authority former chairman Kinuthia wa Mwangi, former member of defunct Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution Philemon Mwaisaka, Prof Kithaka wa Mberia and human rights activist Cyprian Nyamwamu, are among the nearly 800 people seeking six positions of commissioner.

Mr Mwaisaka is also among six candidates shortlisted for the position of Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission chairman.

He has served in the ministries of Transport and Communications, Supplies and marketing, Tourism and Wildlife, Co-operative development, Agriculture and Health as Permanent Secretary.

Mr wa Mwangi served a three-year term as the authority's boss until March this year when they handed over TA's functions to the Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee.
