Homa Bay man jailed for killing wife who threatened divorce

HOMA BAY: A 35 year old man who killed his wife for threatening to divorce him has been sentenced for five years jail term in Homa Bay County.

Fredrick Lugonze was found guilty of killing Florence Awino Abonyo in Homa Bay town.
Lugonze was found guilty before Homa Bay High Court Judge Hellen Omondi.

Lugonze stabbed Florence on the stomach and chest who passed on a few minutes later on arrival at Homa Bay County Referral Hospital.

The prosecution told the court that Lugonze unlawfully caused the death of Florence on December 15, 2015 at Salama estate contrary to the penal code.

In that early morning, Florence left their house at Sofia estate where they lived and went to Salama estate to work as a casual labourer in a building construction.

However, at about 10am, she called Lugonze on phone and told him to forget about any relationship they had had before.

"I am not your wife and will not go back to your house today. Leave me alone," said the deceased.

The comments infuriated Lugonze who left his house to talk to the wife who had lost interest in him.
Upon reaching the construction site, the lady took a stone and threw at Lugonze but he missed the stone.

She then ran away but Lugonze pursued her before catching up with her and stabbed her with the knife.
Lugonze then stabbed himself several times with the same knife and both of them fell unconsciously before they were taken to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital.

Lugonze was later arraigned in court after being discharged. He was initially charged with murder but the case was later reduced to manslaughter.

The convict pleaded guilty saying he had no intention of killing his wife.

"I only wanted to have my wife back but I didn't plan to kill her," he said.
He was given 14 days to appeal.
