Baringo woman dumps new-born baby in cattle dip

A 30-year-old woman was yesterday arrested after she gave birth and dumped her newborn baby in a cattle dip in Mogotio, Baringo County.

The body of the infant was discovered at around 11am at Hill Top cattle dip in Chemogoch.

Upon her arrest, she denied having committed the crime but after being threatened with medical examination, she opened up.

Neighbours said the woman was pregnant until late on Tuesday. "We suspected her because she didn't have the pregnancy this (yesterday) morning. When we asked if she had given birth, she got annoyed and left,'' a neighbour said.

After the arrest, she confirmed the baby was hers but said it was a stillbirth.

Mogotio Deputy County Commissioner Billy Nzungo said such cases were rare in the area.

"I don't understand why someone should go through the pain of giving birth then end up throwing the baby away," Mr Nzungo said.

The incident came a week after two children were burnt to death inside their house.
