Is negative ethnicity becoming part of Kenyans?

News

Over the decades successive regimes have been trying their best to fight ethnicity with all possible means, because each day it creates rifts among Kenyans. Initially we had been citing ignorance as the major contributing factor. However in recent past elite and educated members of the society are fueling ethnicity.

With the plethora of social media platforms Kenyans have weapons at hand to unleash ethnicity in all forms. We have pages and groups in Facebook and whatsApp. These groups are formed on the basis of ethnic extractions ensuring that if a member is not a bonafide member to that particular tribe will be exited.

Although these groups provide podiums for group members to exchange ideas in their vernacular, by large percentage they are used to spew the venom of ethnicity among Kenyans. Their topic majors on the warring tribe that is deemed a political or religious enemy.

We are living in an era of tribal comedies. Every ethnic tribe in Kenya has been branded a funny description sending fallacy images of that particular tribe. Instead of our leaders to help end the ethnicity virus they are fueling it. It is not a surprise today to find a leader depicting a different tribe with these jokes.

Election is barely a year from now but campaigns have gained popularity each day. Each political device is devising the possible strategic plan to enter public office. Funny enough ethnic parties are being formed. CORD leader Raila Odinga and his co-principals Moses Wetangula and Kalonzo Musyoka have formed a Luhya, Luo, Kamba party and are extending their territories to Coastal region. President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto have formed Kalenjin, Gikuyu and Meru nations. These shows that in Kenya our identity is achieved by our tribal identity and political affiliation.

To those who are on social media, use this tool to create unity instead of using it to create rifts and divide Kenyans along ethnic extractions.
