Education CS Matiang’i set to meet University heads

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i
Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i will Monday meet management of public universities, the first in a series of meetings with education stakeholders.

A statement from Jogoo House said the meeting will take place at the Commission for University Education (CUE) offices.

“Matiang’i will hold consultative meetings with chairpersons of councils, vice chancellors of public universities and principals of university constituent colleges at the CUE premises at Gigiri at 8.30am,” reads the statement.

Matiang’i will be confronted with a raft of challenges universities are currently experiencing, on top of the list being governance issues.

Also on the list are the challenges faced by universities from the regulatory agencies that have struck off some of their programmes, such as law and engineering. Tackling student unrest, improvement of quality education and compliance with University Act and regulations will also feature.

Matiang’i faces the daunting task of ensuring smooth leadership transitions in all public institutions and returning of stability to foster realisation of quality education.

The management of examinations, students’ unions finances and how appointive and elective positions are filled would also feature during the meeting.

A document from Jogoo and seen by The Standard shows that efforts of former Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi to address the issues had failed.
