Let pope reconcile Kenyans

Sentiments by a Muslim civil society group appealing to Pope Francis to reconcile and end political hostility occasioned by raising cases of hate speech is laudable. This shows how as a country we have not only fallen short in the glory of God but also in the face of humanity.

Surprisingly the volatile environment is being fueled by politicians. Although they are the creme of the society, instead uniting Kenyans they are doing the contrary. Both from the government and the opposition they have on a number of occasions been uttering abusive words that can lead to bloodshed. Our leaders should be the ambassadors and crusaders of ending the hate speech syndrome.

Furthermore political leaders should not be allowed to abuse freedom of expression as stipulated in constitution. They often forget that this incitement almost brought this country to a total collapse. If one forgets history, he or she is bound to repeat the same mistake.

It is also sad that the National Cohesion and Integration Commission has not been acting firmly to deal with perpetrators of hate speech. It should serve its role as laid out in the constitution.

Let’s hope that when Pope Francis jets in our politicians will heed to his message and allow Kenyans to rest. When you go to social media platforms, you will be surprised. The rate at which hate speech is being spread on social media sites is appalling. Hate speech brewed along ethnic and political divides are the order of the day.

Our local leaders especially the political elite should be role models and help tame hate speech for once and for all.
