Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, this movie centres on CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB agent Illya Kuryakin. Forced to put aside their long-standing hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organisation, which is bent on destabilising the fragile balance of power through the creation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to invading the criminal organisation and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe even as they each pursue their own agendas.
Thumbs up
The movie should appeal to fans of quick, stylised action films. The story line is at the required level of ridiculous, and the performances are solid. Car enthusiasts will love it, as will vintage fashionistas, and it was good to see that 60’s aesthetics were not accompanied by the sexist sensibilities of the era. The accents are great too. It is refreshing to watch something that is funny, has action, and is not trying to combine too much drama into an action movie.
Thumbs down
The film does not always find the right spark to match the acting chemistry. It is just the same plot over and over again.
Verdict
Genuinely good fun and very interesting
