Ministry to probe Kenya Hockey Union over Uruguay fiasco

The Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) will have to answer to the ministry of Sports for the unfortunate events that befell the women’s national hockey team which participated in the International Hockey Federation (FIH) World League Two — that also served as an Olympic qualifier — in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario told Feverpitch that his ministry will not let KHU get away with it as they had failed the players and the country. “KHU failed the national team and the country at large, we will not let them or any other federation get away with such levels of incompetence.”

Wario noted that it was still hard for him to comprehend how the management of KHU could ignore and take for granted a team that qualified for a tournament of such magnitude. “This was a high profile tournament, it was an Olympic qualifying event, KHU must explain to the ministry why they did not give it the seriousness it deserved.”

He added that the sad events have exposed the rot in hockey and KHU is now under the watchful eye of the ministry and they will involve the Registrar of Sports.

“We will summon them to a meeting next week. We are also following up with the registrar’s office to see if they are registered and have complied with the requirements,” Wario said.
