Kenya: Kakamega County Senator Boni Khalwale has called for the prosecution of Kenyans mentioned in the "ChickenGate" scandal of the UK.
Khalwale who is the senate committee chairman on Public Accounts and Investments called for the arrest of Cabinet Secretary Energy and Petroleum, Davis Chirchir, former Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) boss Paul Wasanga and Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman, Isaack Hassan.
Early this week a UK court convicted a man and his son for bribing the Kenyan officials in the KNEC and the defunct Interim Independent Electoral Commission in 2008 and 2010. The three have denied the claims despite the UK convictions and on Sunday Deputy President William Ruto argued they should not be arrested without independent investigations.
" Let Chirchir, Wasanga and Hassan be arrested and charged with corruption just like it has happened to their counterparts in Britain," said Khalwale when he addressed the media on the sidelines of a consultative meeting between senate, council of governors and county assemblies on public finance at Serena Hotel in Mombasa.
Khalwale accused the IEBC chairman of working for the "highest bidder" saying Isaack was unfit to hold the position with the corruption claims hanging on him.
"If he accepted chicken to mess with 2013 polls, what will prevent him from accepting a goat to mess with the 2017 general elections?" posed Khalwale.
He said the coming general elections will be a hotly contested race that could plunge the country into chaos if managed by people of questionable integrity.
"The 2017 polls will be hotly contested elections and the integrity of the person manning the polls must be one whose integrity is above board to prevent chaos," said Khalwale.
He called on President Uhuru to order for prosecution of those involved saying Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) lacked the will to apply the law to charge those involved in the scandal.
