DPP Keriako Tobiko orders EACC to investigate MPs Keter, Sunjeev over weighbridge commotion

NAIROBI: Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko has ordered anti-graft agency and police to investigate and take action on Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter over an incident in which he threatened officials there over lorries detained for overweight.

The detectives will also summon nominated URP MP Sunjeev Kaur Birdi who had accompanied the MP to the weighbridge on Saturday night demanding the release of the lorries.

Kenya National Highway Authority, SGS Kenya Limited officials and police had detained the lorries for among others lacking proper papers and overweight when the incident happened.

Tobiko said he wants investigation file on the issue within a week for action.

“I have seen the video and directed EACC and police to take action on the MP and others who were involved for justice. It is unbelievable,” said Tobiko.

The DPP took action after a video emerged in which Keter was captured insulting and threatening the police, and officials contracted to man the weighbridge for detaining the lorries while invoking the name of the president.

The two MPs claimed that State House comptroller, Rift Valley PC Osman Warfa and chairman of Parliamentary committee on security Asman Kamama and top police officers had called demanding the release of the lorries but the officials there had allegedly refused to respond.

“It is so mad imagine, State House Comptroller, that is the President communicating, he is calling none is picking. I called none responds, am a Member of Parliament. Chairman of security committee in Kenya Kamama calls none picks, this one calls none picks (Birdi). We are about ten Members of Parliament. You are waiting to hear from who? From God? Jesus Christ to call you? Go away…” Keter is captured on video ranting.

National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale sent a statement to newsrooms saying action should be taken against Keter and Birdi.

“The Jubilee Administration does not condone corruption, coercion or intimidation in the name of State House or the President. We want the relevant institutions to take action on any misconduct involving any of our members.” Duale wrote.
