Leaders want police retrained on children rights after Lang’ata teargasing

BONDO: Siaya Woman Representative Christine Ombaka and Alego Usonga MP George Muluan have condemned the teargasing of school children who were protesting the grabbing of their playground.

The leaders, who spoke in Alego constituency, called for retraining of police officers.

"Let Kenyans imagine what would happen if the suspended clauses in the controversial security law were left operational. That is a pointer that the new security law should be cancelled or else we will be witnessing more of such," said Muluan.

Dr Ombaka said it is was wrong for police to use excessive force on the demonstrating pupils. "Children are harmless. Those kids had the right to demonstrate because their school grounds had been grabbed. The police should take care of children not harass them," said Ombaka.

The roughing up of Lang'ata Road Primary School pupils by police elicited angry reactions from the public, forcing President Uhuru Kenyatta to apologise to the children on behalf of the Government.
