Wildlife attack victims to wait longer for payout

Tana Delta, Kenya: Relatives of four children who were killed by a hyena in Tana Delta District last week will have to wait for the formation of the County Wildlife Conservation and Compensation Committee before they can be compensated.

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Warden in charge of Tana River County, Francis Muchiri, urged the relatives to be patient while the Government puts in place mechanisms for compensating victims of wildlife attacks.

Speaking in Hola town yesterday, Mr Muchiri said the new Wildlife Management Act requires that county wildlife conservation and compensation committees be formed to handle matters of conservation and compensation in their respective counties.

KWS Director General William Kiprono and Galole MP Hassan Dukicha said following the attack in Waldena location that the families would receive a total of Sh20 million for the loss of the children.

“As we speak, the Cabinet Secretary in charge of Environment, Water and Natural Resource is yet to publish regulations for the formation of the committees,” said Muchiri.
